The Old 97's in the Crossroads
Finally, a show that both Twisted Wife and I agree on, nobody dragging the other kicking and screaming to the venue. Hell, we even got Twisted Father In-Law to go. Although it was advertised as being "in the Crossroads," it was really in the empty lot behind Grinders. Many of our cool friends bragged about how awesome it was to see a show there as if we'd never been to a shitty vacant lot to drink beer and watch bar bands. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the ambiance. However, I was impressed with the opening band, The Dreams. They were what everyone wants in an opener, loud, rough and rockin'. Their lyrics were filled with "shit" and "fuck," and they had a great song about killing your girlfriend in a bathtub... I think.
The Old 97's Review As I've said, we were in a vacant lot, and at first it seemed like the band knew we were in a vacant lot. Although they were very gracious and told us what an awesome crowd we were, their delivery was off. They just sounded loose, as if they were rehearsing for a show somewhere else. The sound sucked, lead guitar drowning out vocals and bass that muddled each and every song into a buzzing mess.
I guess it's a good thing that at its heart the Old 97's is a bar band. It was obvious that they'd dealt with all this shit before and their songs were made for loose interpretations if the mood struck. They fed off the energy of the crowd and by the time they started winding down, they actually began to sound good (and I wasn't drinking).
All in all, it was a decent show. So decent in fact, TW and I are going back to the vacant lot behind Grinders for the Polyphonic Spree.
