The Last Alien
Identity theft is one thing, taking an identity is quite another.
Monetary gain is not the ultimate goal for many who take an identity. Subversive
politics, disease, unfortunate life choices and fear of death are a small sampling
from the list of reasons one may assume a new persona. Of course, reasons are not
the issue here. When you are forced into that dank corner and have to take a new identity,
there is little, if any, thought as to whom might have been its previous owner. We've
all been taught that we cannot change the past or the present. So we must to look to
the future, and for many this means new personal information is merely a means to change
their unfortunate destiny. However, some identities carry a bit more baggage than others.
Today, no one is ever what they seem. No matter. With our instinct to consume, we've
surrendered our power to define ourselves. Quite simply, we are who the credit companies
say we are. Whether it's a few minutes in a chat room, signing into a hotel for a day under
an assumed name, a few months of drug-soaked wandering in a foreign country or a lifetime of
running from your past, we are faceless millions trying to escape reality in any way possible.
Casper Edwards is simply our identity.
Whatever Happened?
Those of you who have read He Kept to
Himself, Mostly and Random
Acts... will recognize Casper from his cameos. His most memorable
being the day we met on the plane.
Though everyone on that plane wished for two things, the little boy to
sit still and the old woman to stop screaming or die, it is my pleasure
to report that the boy has become a well-mannered young man. However,
the old woman has not been as fortunate.
