Where Did We Go Wrong?
After four years of struggling with the stories in this book, this was
the first response. I admit that inside I was doing a little dance. Not
only did my family read the stories, they listened. What they heard was
disturbing.
I tried not to smile. I tried to explain. These stories are fiction,
and all good fiction makes you feel.
Of course, it made my mother feel uncomfortable. You would think I would
make an effort not to upset her after the childhood I put her through.
What Did We Do?
The stories in this book try to answer that very question. It looks at
the world from the vantage points of its most unsavory characters.
These are characters no one wants to let in, no one wants to like, and
no one wants to emulate. That's what makes them interesting. That's what
makes their opinions valid, their complete lack of characteristics that
may possibly cause someone to feel compassion for them.
My characters, the lovers, killers, strippers, aliens, angels, gods,
and thieves, aren't lovable. But, their stories are interesting. And I
hope they make you feel, even if it is discomfort.
